6 Steps for Hardwood Flooring
  • Step 1: Provide an estimate.
  • Step 2: (Optional) Install raw wood flooring and/or make any necessary repairs to damaged boards.
  • Step 3: Repair any chips, cracks, stains, or blemishes.
  • Step 4: Use wood filler as necessary and sand floor.
  • Step 5: Stain color of your choice onto the floor surface.
  • Step 6: Apply three coats of polyurethane in the sheen you choose (spread out over three separate days).
Choices, Choices… Pre-finished Versus Unfinished Floors First of all, we’re talking about ¾” tongue-and-groove hardwood flooring. This is very different than the “floating floor” varieties which don’t need to be nailed down. If you’re on a tight budget, you may want to consider a pre-finished floor which comes from the mill already stained and coated. (If you’re on an even tighter budget, consider a “floating floor” or laminate flooring where the flooring pieces have pads built in and the pieces click together – a.k.a. Pergo, etc.) However, if you’re looking for more customization based on widths and wood species or you’re looking to match existing flooring, unfinished flooring is the way to go. The raw wood is nailed down, sanded, stained, and finished on site to your desire.

Dust Containment
  • At Solid Rock Custom Construction, we use a 90% dust free method. We will tape plastic sheeting over sensitive areas. Our edgers and buffers are connected to large vacuums and our main belt sanders have vacuum bags attached to them at all times. Honestly, it may very well be cleaner after we come through than before!

Return on Investment
  • One of the items that can add significant value to your home is wood floors. It’s that simple. If you’ve got an older home, chances are that there is wood flooring underneath! Just pry a corner loose and take a look. Underneath that nasty carpet that has years of dust, dead skin cells, dirt and only God-knows-what embedded for eternity in there (sorry to be so frank!), you might find a beautiful canvas of hardwood flooring. Rip the bandage off and just let us refinish those floors! Besides that, I’m going to plagiarize what a 2013 National Wood Flooring Association study quantitatively revealed:
  • The National Wood Flooring Association conducted a survey of real estate agents across the United States to determine the impact of hardwood flooring on a home’s appeal, sales potential and overall value. The results revealed that 99 percent of the real estate agents participating believe that homes with hardwood floors are easier to sell. The reason for this is quite clear. Today’s home buyer expects more, and many items that were considered luxury options just a few decades ago are now considered essential to a home’s salability. Upgraded appliances, hard-surface flooring and professional landscaping are just a few examples of how home-buying trends have shifted, and how homes without these features are at a sales disadvantage.
  • Another interesting result of the survey is that 82 percent of the real estate agents participating believe that homes with hardwood floors sell faster than homes without them. This indicates the value of hardwood floors as well, because homes that sell faster tend to sell closer to their asking price. Homes that sell faster result in more overall profits for their sellers, and if wood floors are able to help sell the home faster, they add to the overall value of the home.
